Local Exchange News

NEW MEMBERS

Congratulations on becoming a member of Portobello Timebank! If you are coming here for the first time, you have some work to do to get yourself on the timebank map. Your welcome letter describes all the ways you can get help to use the system – it may take a little time to get familiar with it, but it’s worth persevering with.
You’ll be most anxious to add your offers and requests – to help you out we’ve made a list of what’s on the system at the moment. If there’s anything you have/want that’s not on the list, contact a timebroker on info@portobellotimebank.co.uk to get it added.
Don’t forget to add your profile and photo – we want to get to know you!

EXISTING MEMBERS

You may have noticed that over the past few months we’ve been trying to improve our communications with members. We have a new local front-end website at www.portobellotimebank.co.uk where you can review the principles of timebanking, catch up with the latest news and plans, then use it as a gateway to here, the hOurworld site where your offers, requests and exchanges are recorded.

This year we have extended our activities to community projects which have proved popular with our members and the public alike. You can see photos of the results on our Facebook page.

Our membership has been growing steadily throughout the year and several of the newer members are very active. Attendance at our monthly meetings (normally at the Dalriada on the 2nd Thursday of each month, but check the website/Facebook first) has happily been picking up lately. Exchanges are much more likely to take place if you have met other members - in fact a large number of requests never make it to the database or weekly newsletter. They're organised between people who've met through previous exchanges. So if you're feeling out of it, take the first steps: update your profile, add some new offers and requests, join us in person at our monthly meetings, events, games group or community tasks.

Timebanking UK News

Who are Timebanking UK?

Time Banking UK is the national umbrella charity linking and supporting time banks across the country. We provide support, advice, guidance, resources and training to anyone interested in learning about timebanking, incorporating timebanking into their organisation or those who want to start up community time banks.

Timebanking UK supports all models of timebanking in all settings, with organisational timebanking becoming a big part of the sustainability plans of networks across the country.

Timebanking is witnessing extraordinary growth since the first time banks in the UK in 1998.  Spread to over 40 nations and 6 continents, there is now over 26,000 people time banking in the UK alone who have generated over 1.3 million hours of support for each other. There are new time banks being set up every week.  With the twin drivers of the public deficit crisis and the Coalition Government’s commitment to hand more power and responsibility to local communities and individuals, the political climate could not be more supportive of time banking.

We are a charity and company limited by guarantee.

Our head office is in Stroud, Gloucestershire where our core team work and liaise with time banks across the country.

OUR VISION

Timebanking UK believes in a world in which people may have all they need for their own well being by contributing what they can to:

  • Building community
  • Caring for the marginalized
  • Bringing up healthy children
  • Fighting injustice

To do this we have three clear roles: HELPING, THINKING & DOING.

1) Helping -

Supporting timebanking projects and our membership through advice, consultancy, training and technical support

2) Thinking -

Researching and evaluating timebanks projects, helping to shape the policy debate around coproduction and sytem change

3) Doing -

Prototyping and piloting new models of timebanking and co-productions, such as the ‘Shares’ social marketplace.

Who do we work with?

We work primarily with organisations from the public and community sectors, in a consultancy and advisory capacity

Our training programmes cover a broad range of interests through from local community champions interested in timebanking to commissioners of public services.

Our software and support packages are open to everyone.

FEEDBACK

Tell us how your last exchange went using info@portobellotimebank.co.uk – it’ll be anonymous.

"Frank was very helpful, easy to be with, knowledgeable without being overbearing, very practical."

"We walked along the [Brunstane] burn this morning. It's looking so much better after all the l&a it's been treated to over the past few months. Thanks for all your hard work."

"Thank you James for taking my old stove to the recycling centre. It’s been cluttering up my workroom for longer than I care to mention. You turned up willingly at the ungodly hour I suggested on a Sunday morning, and dropped me back home in a half hour. Something I had wanted rid of for ages was gone in a mere half hour. What a result!"

"I really enjoyed learning how to play mahjong and our group are all now enthusiastic players. The games are social occasions too, and lots of other exchanges take place between the group members because we know each other."

"Did my first sewing job...lovely to meet Ursula and I surprised both of us by completing it so quickly....would have taken me weeks if it was for myself!!!"

"Thanks to Portobello Time Bank I have a lovely chocolate cake awaiting my parents arrival tomorrow"

"This really works, even though I already have a busy lifestyle"
