Engaging interactions amongst individuals for a stronger, more resilient community

Updated TOS need to re-accept!

Go ahead, spend your time (not money - it’s free) and become a member. Then get your neighbors on board.

Think about what services you could offer to your neighbors and what services you could use some help with.  We recognize that each person has talents to share, and that the overall community is strengthened when neighbors help one another. Instead of separating our community into those who need and those who provide, we recognize that we all have needs and gifts to share. By both giving AND receiving, we learn to appreciate the value of each and every member and also come to believe in the value of our own contributions.

Also, begin to think about what services you might need or could provide in the event of an emergency.  Who might you want to contact you in the event of an emergency and is there a neighbor that you would be willing to reach out to if there was a community emergency? We will soon be incorporating features that will enable the community exchange to function as an emergency response system.

REBUILDING communities that are RESILIENT & READY to weather the storm - learn more...

hOurworld has provided a proactive network of community exchanges that enables individuals to give and receive needed services in their county of residence. In times of individual or community need, whether it be an economic downturn, emergency or disaster, family, friends, neighbors, community organizations and businesses are typically the first responders. Establishment of active relief networks of neighbors helping neighbors is a key to a stronger, healthier, more resilient community.

Our Finger Lakes Time Bank is part of the sharing economy where time, or person-hour, is used as currency. Members receive and provide gifts of time and talent with other members of the exchange. Person-hours invested doing work for someone else can be “spent” on any service offered by any other member of the community exchange.

Person-hours exchanged are recorded by the members using a proprietary computer program where members post their needs as well as the skills they wish to provide. Community exchange coordinators, which are also members, can assist members that are off-line to relay services. The more members within the community exchange equates to more skills and services available to the community.

Getting to know and be able to help and be helped by neighbors makes the community a place to want to be in; giving that nice, warm and fuzzy feeling. Members will also know who to call when there is a dire need for assistance.  Whether it be a plumbing leak or flooding as a result of a hurricane, a neighbor could come quickly to the rescue. So knowing neighbors that are capable and willing to come to your aid is essential both when there are “blue, sunny skies” and when personal, natural or man-made disaster strikes.

What you could do to help, is communicate with others in your community and tell them about it and request that they sign up as a member. We can give you hours for reaching out to people to start you off with hours accumulated into your account.

If you would like to help coordinate your community network - getting members, potentially running programs, etc., we can work together on that (in addition to being a member, you could become one of the coordinators and earn hours for that as well). Let me know if this interests you (We could really use your help)!

We will be incorporating features that will enable the community exchange to function as an emergency response system. If a county state strong community exchange is not yet in your community and you are interested in establishing one with an emergency response system, please reach out to me.

Are you ready to join your neighbors and give & receive services without an outlay of cash?

Anyone can sign up for the Finger Lakes Time Bank – businesses, non-profits, homemakers, skilled tradesman, professionals, artisans, etc.

  1. Our Core Values: We mean many things to many people and our core values are what bind us together and makes us a community.

    1. Assets: We all have talents and strengths. We are all assets. Every human being has something of value to contribute

    2. Equality: At the heart of every exchange of time is equality. All people are valued equally at [our service exchange]. One hour of service equals one time credit, regardless of the service. One hour of legal advice equals one hour of weatherization equals one hour of transportation or help, etc.

    3. Respect: Everyone matters. We must respect where people are in the moment, not where we hope they will be at some future point.

    4. Redefining Work: Work is beyond price. We feel that work must be redefined to include all of the activities it takes to sustain families, neighborhoods and communities, to sustain our democracy and to advance social justice. This kind of work needs to be honored and rewarded.

    5. Reciprocity: Helping works better as a two way street. The question, “How can I help you?” needs to be changed to, “How can we help each other build the world we both want to live in?” At [our service exchange], you earn what you receive. You can feel good about what you are exchanging because you are not always taking, or always giving.
